We’ve been running in the same blogging circles as Kimberly Mitchell for years now. She’s also a serious writer, which is also right up our alley (as readers and writers).
But you know how you “know” someone without really getting to know them well? Well, we wanted to get to know Kimberly better, find out about her adorable daughters and the farm she and her husband own, plus the online farmer’s market they just launched.
Enjoy this interview with Kimberly:
Kids’ names and ages: Abigayle (22 months) Allyson (3 months)
Where do you live and what brought you to NWA?
I came to NWA to attend the U of A and loved the area and stayed, except for a three-year stint abroad. I’ve lived in Fayetteville and Springdale, but two years ago we moved to a 50-acre farm in Lincoln.
What’s the funniest thing that happened to you as a mom most recently?
Is it funny when your toddler thinks it’s okay to take off all her clothes and diaper during nap time?
Where are your family’s favorite places to play in NWA?
We love going to parks. Prairie Grove Battlefield Park has a great playground and a walking trail for me. You can also find us at parks in Farmington and Fayetteville several times a week.
We know you’re a writer. What are you working on right now?
Finding time to write right now is so tough. When both girls are napping at the same time (never a guarantee) I work on a middle grade adventure I hope will be picked up by an agent and eventually a publisher.
What are some of the books you’ve published?
I have a young adult dystopian story and a middle grade adventure coming out with Glass House Press in 2019 and 2020 and a middle grade mystery series coming out with Vinspire Publishing. Keep up with me and book release dates at kimberlymitchell.us.
Tell us about your farm, Dos Locos:
Two years ago we moved to a 50-acre farm in Lincoln. Neither of us have experience in farming, so we named the new adventure Dos Locos Farms – two crazy people trying something new!
We raise goats and sheep and a limited amount of veggies and eggs to sell at the Siloam Springs Farmers Market. We recently launched the Northwest Arkansas Online Farmers Market, which makes fresh produce, meat, baked goods, and other locally produced items available online and we deliver to your door! You can visit NWAOnlineFarmersMarket.com to order from our vendors!
Share a typical day in your life with us:
With a 3-month-old, my days currently revolve around feedings! However, we try to visit a park or play outside on the farm in the mornings. I try to keep the girls on a schedule for my own sanity.
During afternoon nap time I run to my desk and try to write. Once the girls are awake, we play outside again or inside if I have a chore to do or dinner to prepare. After dinner it’s bathtime and bedtime for my toddler.
The baby doesn’t go to bed that early yet but I try to walk our dogs or go for a run while my husband watches her so I can have a little me time.
If you could vacation anywhere in the world this summer, where would you go? The World Cup in Russia!
What’s your favorite NWA restaurant? Gabriela’s in Prairie Grove.
If you could magically have a new skill, what would it be?
Adding hours to the day so I could write a little more, play with the girls a little more and of course, sleep more!
How would your best friend describe you?
Fun-loving, sporty, ready for adventure, hates cooking and doing the dishes!
If you got an unexpected gift of (a lot of) cash, what would you do with it?
Travel. No question. Ah well, and maybe save some for the girls’ education, but we consider traveling, especially internationally, as a great way to educate yourself, too.
How do you relax when things get too intense? I have to get outside and exercise!!
Who do you most admire? Why?
My parents. They’re celebrating their 50th anniversary this summer and that’s a rare and special event. They taught me how to value hard work and to have some fun and most importantly, how to love well. They raised four daughters and I’m so happy to be raising two daughters of my own now!
If you could write a letter to someone and have a guarantee they’d write you back, who would it be?
Madeleine L’Engle. She’s been one of my favorite authors since childhood.
What do you most want people to remember about you? How much I love life and those I share it with!
One word to sum me up: Adventurous
