What We’re Reading: “Thank You For Listening,” by Julia Whelan

Do you have a good book you’re loving right now? Summer is coming and you need a great novel!

We just finished one that you might like as much as we did. It’s called “Thank You For Listening,” by Julia Whelan.

What it’s about:

For Sewanee Chester, being an audiobook narrator is a long way from her old dreams, but the days of being a star on film sets are long behind her. She’s found success and satisfaction from the inside of a sound booth and it allows her to care for her beloved, ailing grandmother. When she arrives in Las Vegas last minute for a book convention, Sewanee unexpectedly spends a whirlwind night with a charming stranger.

On her return home, Sewanee discovers one of the world’s most beloved romance novelists wanted her to perform her last book—with Brock McNight, the industry’s hottest, most secretive voice. Sewanee doesn’t buy what romance novels are selling—not after her own dreams were tragically cut short—and she stopped narrating them years ago. But her admiration of the late author, and the opportunity to get her grandmother more help, make her decision for her.

As Sewanee begins work on the book, resurrecting her old romance pseudonym, she and Brock forge a real connection, hidden behind the comfort of anonymity. Soon, she is dreaming again, but secrets are revealed, and the realities of life come crashing down around her once more.

If she can learn to risk everything for desires she has long buried, she will discover a world of intimacy and acceptance she never believed would be hers.

What we liked about “Thank You For Listening,” by Julia Whelan:

The dialogue (including the numerous text trails between the two main characters) is just GREAT. The character interactions (on email, in text messages, and in-person) crackle with chemistry and many of them are laugh-out-loud funny.

There’s a great best-friend story in this novel as well as a moving connection between the main character and her grandmother.

This is a romantic comedy that doesn’t take itself too seriously. It often pokes fun at the romantic genre tropes people know so well.

We also like the pacing in this book, which saves the best for last and keeps you eager to turn pages along the way. This is a perfect beach read, book club novel, or book you take with you to the pool or the park.

One more thing:

If you love audiobooks, this is DEFINITELY one you should download. The author earned a huge following as a narrator of audiobooks. We’ve heard her read lots of other novels we love, and she never disappoints. Plus, the book’s main character is also an audiobook narrator, so it makes perfect sense to listen to this one.
