Waking up in the night? Try these ideas

One of the side effects of being a mama — especially when life is hard and you are STRESSED — is waking up in the middle of the night and then not being able to go back to sleep.

Raise your hand if you’ve lost hours of sleep because you woke up and your mind went into overdrive, stealing what little time you have to get some rest. Yep, that’s just about every one of us.

When we saw this great article in Self Magazine by Jessica Migala, a fellow mom, we knew we had to share it with all our Northwest Arkansas mamas.

It gives three great tips for what to do when you wake up and can’t get back to sleep. (Did you know most adults wake up around 10 times a night but it’s so short that we don’t even remember it? Crazy, right?)

After reading this, you’ll understand what’s actually happening in your brain when you wake up in the night. The author also shares tips from sleep experts on what to DO when you find yourself stuck awake with a mind on overdrive. Finally, you’ll learn how to talk to yourself about this problem so that you don’t end up just worrying about the fact that you aren’t getting enough sleep. Sometimes it can be a vicious cycle.

As moms, we know there are plenty of concerns or fears that keep our brains busy — even when they’re supposed to be off duty. So we hope these tips are helpful as you help yourself get back to sleep so you can get the rest this high-intensity job of parenthood requires.
