How cool would it be for your kids to get a taste of the college educational experience by taking fun classes on a real campus?
Here’s their chance!
These short-term classes, offered by NorthWest Arkansas Community College, may just be the experience that ignites their passion for a certain topic.
NWACC’s Kid’s College is for students ages 9-13. The short-term classes include computer coding, robotics, and presidential elections. There’s also cooking, drawing comics and manga, junior medic and other interesting options.
There are half-day and full-day classes and they’ll be offered in June or July, so be sure to sign up early and save a seat for your kids. (Click here to visit the page with class listings, prices and days offered.)
Here are just a few of the classes being offered, along with their descriptions:
Robotics I
Unleash creative powers working with LEGO Mindstorms robots. Learn concepts in engineering, probability, and technology. Kids will be taught STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) principles through building individual robots.
Geospatial Technology I
Students will explore the basics of geospatial science and technology. Utilizing computers, students will explore planet Earth. They will also be using hardware with GPS receivers to collect information and visualize features on computers.
Character Design – Full Day
(Pre-requisite for Draw Comics and Manga)
Students create their own cartoon and comic characters. Students will learn the fundamentals of drawing the figure and facial expression from their imagination.
American Presidential Elections – Full Day
How is the most powerful U.S. politician elected to public office? This course will focus on this question utilizing a simulation to role-play and learn about the election process. Recently published articles will help students learn about the two-party system, campaigning, swing states, political advertising, ideology, the Electoral College, voter turnout, foreign and domestic policy, and interest group politics.
Learn about the delicious world of food! Kids will be elbow deep in fun, working together making recipes and learning about food and nutrition. We’ll provide the ingredients and tools, just come for the fun!
Want to be a firefighter, paramedic, or work in healthcare? Campers will learn career facets of first respondents, fire rescue, nursing, respiratory therapy, and physical therapy in this interactive and hands-on week. The final day will include special helicopter, fire safety, and vehicle extrication demonstrations.
