Dear Northwest Arkansas Mamas,
We’ve been there, and we can tell you that this phase of parenting doesn’t have to be as scary as it feels. Some people will tell you that your high school kid getting into the “right” college is critically important. They’re wrong. It’s not life or death. It’s not success or failure. It won’t dictate their future happiness. It’s a choice, and there are plenty of options that are going to work out great.
We know this because we’ve lived it with our own kids. That’s why we LOVE this article we found published on the Grown & Flown website, which is a must-have resource for any parent with kids approaching college age. The article quotes a professor who said the words “It just doesn’t matter that much.” Truer words have never been spoken. He is right. And knowing this helps parents and their kids slow down and take a breath.
If you are fully freaked out about helping your kid get into the “right” kind of college, please read this incredibly insightful post titled “Why the College Decision Just Doesn’t Matter,” by Paige Johnson. We can practically guarantee that you’ll see things a little differently after you read it, and maybe it’ll help you relax that tangled ball of nerves that has been building in your chest for over a year. Have your teenagers read it, too.

Hang in there. It gets easier.
