With Spring Break coming up, we thought it would be fun to ask some of you Motherlode mamas to suggest a few good reads we could take along in a suitcase — or just keep on the bedside table.

Here’s a sampling of your suggestions (click on the book title to go read more about it at Amazon):

Trista: The Lovely Bones (wasn’t impressed with the movie, loved the book) and Lucky: A Memoir, both by Alice Sebold.

Kimberly: Angela’s Ashes a memoir by Frank McCourt, The Great Santini by Pat Conroy, The Prince of Tides by Pat Conroy.

Savanah: Here’s the first ones to come to mind that I think other mamas may like. I’m a bibliomaniac, though, so there’s plenty more where these came from. Haha!

An all-time fave, an epic tale– The Prince of Tides by Pat Conroy

Best recent reads– Water For Elephants by Sara Gruen, & The Jewels of Tessa Kent by Judith Krantz

One more — Paula, by Isabel Allende. It’s a true story, about a woman writing her family history for her daughter– who is in a coma– after she realizes that there are many things that she never got a chance to tell her daughter.

Thanks for all the great book ideas, moms! Whether you’re leaving town for Spring Break or enjoying a stay-cation, we hope you find time for some literary pursuits along with your other adventures. Happy reading!

  1. Have read Lovely Bones and Angela’s Ashes…both were great. If you liked Angelas ashes…read ‘Tis by Frank McCourt. I just finished Anna Karenina by Tolstoy and about to start The Time Travelers wife. Am also reading “Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child”….I keep the Kindle burning :O)

  2. I’m reading Olive Kitteredge (Elizabeth Stout), and I just picked up Little Bee and Girl With a Dragon Tattoo … I wish I could spend a weekend (or at least a day) just curled up with my books!
