Northwest Arkansas Calendar of Events: June 2020

Hi mamas! This is the first time since March that we’ve published a calendar of community events in Northwest Arkansas. We’re thrilled to have the opportunity to write about events again, but we urge you to continue to follow the CDC guidelines when you’re out and about, which means keeping a safe distance when possible. It also means having a mask to wear when you need to be within 6 feet of other people.

Have fun and be safe out there, mamas!

Virtual Author Event with Children’s Author Nick Bruel

Watch our virtual author event with beloved children’s book author Nick Bruel, author of “Bad Kitty Joins the Team” on Monday, June 1 at 2:00 p.m. at facebook.com/hectv.

The event will be archived for later view at hecmedia.org.

See Kitty as you’ve never seen her before: EXERCISING (reluctantly) in “Bad Kitty Joins the Team,” the latest installment of Nick Bruel’s popular series for early readers. Kitty is terribly out of shape. She can barely torment Puppy without needing a break to huff and puff. It’s going to take some serious convincing, a high-stakes competition, and a little bit of trickery… will our favorite feline friend learn what it means to be a good sport? Find out in this hilarious addition to the Bad Kitty series.

Time: 2 p.m.

Date: June 1

Location: online

Illinois River Kayaking

Join us for a fun day kayaking the Illinois River and tasting some phenomenal craft beer. The Illinois River starts southwest of Fayetteville and flows for 145 miles until it reaches the Lake Frances Dam on the Oklahoma state line. We will be doing a 4.5-mile beginner-friendly float on the Upper Illinois River with amazing views and crystal clear waters. We will stop at many of the shade-filled banks and the crystal clear swimming holes along the way during our float down the river.

After a long morning on the water, we will head to Ivory Bill Brewing Company – a brewery and taproom nestled in Historic Downtown Siloam Springs and housed in a 1930’s Pontiac dealership. This is the perfect complement to a day spent on the river.  Expand your tastebuds or stick with what you know you love, either way, the atmosphere will be the perfect setting to hang out with new friends and relax.

Breaking the Silence of Sexual Abuse 5K and 10K Virtual Race

It is highly likely that you know a child who has or is being sexually abused. Statistically, this epidemic affects 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 6 boys, 62 percent of these child victims never report the abuse. Through awareness and education, we can help prevent this from happening to the children in our lives. Be a part of the solution. 50 percent of proceeds will go to the Joplin’s Children’s Center who serve abused children in our area.

COVID UPDATE: Due to current circumstances, we have decided to change this event to a virtual race as the health and safety of our community is our top priority.  A virtual run/walk can be done on your own time and place. It can be a treadmill, local trail or neighborhood on any day or time through the month of June 1-30. Please post your run selfie on our Facebook or Instagram page with your results. Don’t forget to add #Breakingthesilencejoplin!

After completion of the virtual event, race medals and shirts will be available/mailed to participants.

We will hike 3 miles of moderate terrain around the lake and end the hike with a gentle yoga practice that is suitable for all levels. Our yoga practice will be followed by a peaceful picnic as we sit next to the lake and take in the day. Feel free to bring a swimsuit to cool down in the lake.
