I ran across this article on the Readers Digest website, and it’s pretty thought-provoking. The sources for the article include convicted burglars from several different states. The authors compiled a list of 13 things that “burglars won’t tell you” but that you need to know if you want to avoid becoming a burglary victim. Here are a couple of examples of the tips:
“Hey, thanks for letting me use the bathroom when I was working in your yard last week. While I was in there, I unlatched the back window to make my return a little easier.”
“A loud TV or radio can be a better deterrent than the best alarm system. If you’re reluctant to leave your TV on while you’re out of town, you can buy a $35 devide that works on a timer and simulates the flickering glow of a real television. (Find it at faketv.com.)”
The tips also suggested that most burglars won’t go into kids’ rooms to look for valuables like jewelry, etc. But when they see kids’ toys left outside on a driveway, it makes them wonder what type of gaming system you might have inside.
