Doc Talk: The story of my mellow yellow firstborn

True story: When I had my first baby, I thought he looked absolutely perfect, as most mothers do. He had blue eyes, strawberry blonde hair, and beautiful skin that seemed to be a little bit tan even in the middle of December. When my friend Jennifer (already a mama of two kids) came over to see my baby for the first time, she took one look at him and said “Are you sure he doesn’t have jaundice?”

What? Jaundice? What’s that and how would I know whether or not he has it when I already think he looks perfect in every way? I wish I’d had a Doc Talk video like this to watch back then because, as it turns out, my baby did have jaundice and needed to be treated for it. (The treatment went fine and I’m happy to report that he is now 9-years-old with pale skin and freckles, just like his mama. No more jaundice tan.)

Today you’ll hear from Dr. Hugh Donnell, pictured right, who will explain what jaundice is and how it can be treated in infants. Dr. Donnell runs a family practice with obstetrics at theRogers Medical Center, which is part of the Mercy Health System of Northwest Arkansas. To schedule a visit with him, call 479-338-5555 or click HERE to visit his clinic’s website. (Note: Rogers Medical Center’s doctors can treat pregnant women, deliver babies, and be the main doctor for your family and kids, starting at birth. Pregnant women can have a free consultation visit with Dr. Donnell when looking for a doctor.)
