What We’re Reading: One Day in December by Josie Silver

This month’s reading recommendation will bring you a little Christmas in July! If you love a novel set in England with great British dialogue, this is the one for you. I loved it!

Book title: One Day in December

Author: Josie Silver

Genre: Contemporary Women’s Fiction / Contemporary Romance

What it’s about (without spoilers):

Laurie is pretty sure love at first sight doesn’t exist anywhere but the movies. But then, through a misted-up bus window one snowy December day, she sees a man who she knows instantly is the one. Their eyes meet, there’s a moment of pure magic . . . and then her bus drives away.

Certain they’re fated to find each other again, Laurie spends a year scanning every bus stop and cafe in London for him. But she doesn’t find him, not when it matters anyway. Instead they “reunite” at a Christmas party, when her best friend, Sarah, giddily introduces her new boyfriend to Laurie. It’s Jack, the man from the bus. It would be.

What follows for Laurie, Sarah, and Jack is ten years of friendship, heartbreak, missed opportunities, roads not taken, and destinies reconsidered. One Day in December is a joyous, heartwarming, and immensely moving love story to escape into and a reminder that fate takes inexplicable turns along the route to happiness.

Why we like it: I had the chance last month to go to Europe for the first time ever. When I knew I’d be spending a long flight and then four days in London, I went on the hunt for the perfect novel set in London to listen to on the plane and during my stay in London. I totally lucked out when I ran across this one — One Day in December, by Josie Silver. I instantly fell in love with the two friends at the center of this story. They’re funny, sweet, and so relatable.

The love story will keep you turning pages (or listening), and the narrators on the audio version are SO good. I really could picture the entire book in my head, and I’m hoping this will be a movie one day. The ending will not let you down.

What other people say: This is obviously a crowd favorite because there are more than 51,000 reviews posted on Amazon, and it has a 4.3 star rating. It also earned a recommendation from Reese’s Book Club!

About the author: Josie Silver is an unashamed romantic who met her husband when she stepped on his foot on his twenty-first birthday. She lives with him, her two young sons, and their cats in a little town in England called Wolverhampton.
