What We’re Planting: Sun Petunias

For the past three or four summers, I’ve been planting Supertunias in pots to add some summer color on our porch and patio. It was the first potted plant I bought this spring because I know I can count on it to bloom frequently all summer and through most of the fall, too.

A Supertunia is basically a petunia that has been bred by a company called Proven Winners, and supertunias seem to be better at big, vigorous blooms that don’t need much maintenance.

Here’s a pic of how full and vibrant Supertunias can get.

Here’s what I’ve learned about them:

  • They need about 6 hours of direct sun, preferably in the morning.
  • They grow fast!
  • The blooms are big and pretty constant throughout the spring, summer and most of fall.
  • There are more than 20 different varieties of Supertunias in a wide range of colors.
  • They are “self-cleaning,” which means you won’t need to deadhead or pick off the old blooms.
  • They need to be watered consistently. (I water mine every other day and sometimes daily during the hottest weather.)
  • Fertilize every third time you water if you notice the blooms starting to decrease.
  • If it gets scraggly or “leggy,” just trim it back by about 20 percent.
  • They look great when planted with a “spiller” type of vine plant like Creeping Jenny, which is already starting to spill over the edge of the potted Supertunias I planted about a month ago. Sweet Potato Vine would also work.
