What We’re Planting: Camellias

I’ve never had what people call “a green thumb,” but I’ve learned over the years that the way to compensate for the lack of natural ability is to rely on those who do have it. These days when I go to a greenhouse, I don’t buy until I get advice from a plant expert on what is most likely to grow well in the specific spot I’m trying to fill.

The last recommendation I got from one of my local plant whisperers was a glowing recommendation of winter-hardy camellias. They stay green all year! Aren’t they gorgeous?

Here’s what I’ve learned about them:

  • They like morning sun and afternoon shade.
  • They’re drought tolerant after they’re well established should be watered frequently when they’re newly planted.
  • Blooming period is from September to the first freeze.
  • Blooms can be rose red, pink, or white.
  • Plant grows to 6 to 10 feet high over the course of 10 years.
  • They have dark green, glossy leaves that stay green year-round.

So far, my new camellias are doing great in planters by my front door. I love how they look even without the flowers, but I’m definitely looking forward to seeing those blooms in September, when most of the flowering annuals begin to die off. The camellia blooms should last well into the fall.
