Parenting: 6 Friends Every Mom Needs

When I was at the doctor recently, I picked up a Parenting magazine to kill some time.

One article caught my attention: 6 Friends Every Mom Needs — Why connecting with grown-ups is important for your sanity, and how to pick (and keep) them.

I immediately started shaking my head yes in agreement as I read. The necessary friends included “The Mom in the Same Boat”, “The Been-There Done-That Mom” and the “No-Kids Pal”. It’s so easy to get busy with work, kids and husbands and forget about friends. Everyone does. But it’s worth it to stay connected. Friends can help keep a mom sane.

I think it’s a great idea to have mom friends who can help us meet different needs in our lives. Sometimes it’s fun to hang out with a friend who doesn’t have to worry about getting babysitting days in advance of dinner. But it can also be validating to spend time with a friend who knows exactly what you’re going through at the moment. I also enjoy visiting with friends from my past who knew what I was like as a kid myself.

So keep some of the old ones, but go out and meet some new friends, too! We tell our kids to do it all the time — we should take our own advice.
