Blog 66: Things to do in Lake Chelan, Washington

Lake Chelan 3

Summer is on the way and we’re already thinking about where we might go for vacation. Do you know where you’re headed?

In this Blog 66 feature, we enlist the help of fellow mamas across the blogosphere to give us the low-down on their hometowns. This month we’re getting some help from Kristi Bonney, blogger, photographer and social media junkie. Kristi lives in picturesque Lake Chelan.

Krist says as far as summer events go, here’s what her hometown has going on so far:

  • Cruizin Classic Car Show in downtown Chelan June 7 & 8: City Cruise, Show & Shine, hula hoop championship. music, entertainment, shopping and activities for the whole family
  • Manson Fireworks Festival July 4
  • Chelan Rockin’ Fireworks Show July 6
  • Lake Chelan Bach Fest July 12-20: The Bach Fest String Quartet will be performing free concerts around the valley, wineries, and at the Riverwalk Park.
  • Lake Chelan Roadeo August 2 & 3
  • Lake Chelan Fine Arts Festival August 15-18: Arts, crafts, culinary arts, food, special events and live entertainment.

Kristy adds: For more events, visit the Lake Chelan Chamber of Commerce website. It’s jam packed with great info on planning your trip and the girls who work at the office are super friendly. In fact, they helped me plan our move out here to Lake Chelan!

Lake Chelan 1

Next up, the Lake Chelan Q&A!

1. Tell us a little about what it’s like in Lake Chelan: Lake Chelan is located in north central Washington state and is a 55-mile long lake in Chelan County. Clear, pristine and downright breathtaking, Lake Chelan is a popular vacation destination for families, water sport and wine enthusiasts, many of whom return each year. Lake Chelan offers a wide variety of activities and attractions year-round, but is most popular with summer vacationers.

Lake Chelan 2The little towns of Chelan and Manson are nestled on the lake, where vineyards and orchards pepper the hillside.

2. In your opinion, what makes it worth the trip: If you love getting outdoors, enjoy water activities, small town life and wine, then a visit to Lake Chelan is perfect for you! A relaxed and welcoming community awaits you here in Lake Chelan.

3. When I’m visiting I should definitely plan to eat at: Stop by Blueberry Hills Farm for the 400 Mile French Dip – the slow roasted prime beef sandwich served on a lightly grilled baguette that the Seattle Times penned “worth driving 400 miles for!” You can’t go wrong at Blueberry Hills. The Danish Yeast Waffles are light and airy.

The Real Man Burger is for serious burger eaters only – no sissies allowed! If you’re in the mood for dessert, pick up one of their fresh fruit pies or muffins. Have I mentioned that Blueberry Hills is also a you-pick farm? Great family friendly atmosphere. Beautiful location. Fun decor. Awesome food.

* I wrote about my visit to Blueberry Hills. Click here to read more about it!

4. The best shopping can be found at: Visit Downtown Chelan and Downtown Manson and shop in one of the many family-owned gift shops and boutiques for anything from fine art to jewelry, clothing, gourmet fudge, whole food items, local wine, cheese and more.

5. You do not want to miss these local attractions:

  • Blueberry Hills Farms: Pick blueberries, dine in the farmhouse or out on the patio or indulge in one of their homemade decadent desserts.
  • Chelan Riverwalk: Get active and enjoy the one-mile scenic river view loop trail in downtown Chelan
  • Slidewaters Lake Chelan Waterpark: Great place for family water park fun.
  • Vin du Lac Winery: Stop by for a wine tasting, tour, delicious meal in a beautiful setting and live jazz music on Saturdays!

6. A hidden gem: Stehekin, though not hidden, is an absolute must-see. Tucked away on the northwest end of Lake Chelan, Stehekin is accessible only by boat, seaplane or hiking. Simply put, Stehekin is heaven on earth. Take the ferry and stay awhile. There’s lots to do – river rafting, kayaking, horseback riding, bicycling.

Lake Chelan 57. Be sure to take your kids to: Slidewaters Lake Chelan Waterpark. Be sure to take your kids to Slidewaters Lake Chelan Waterpark for a day filled with family fun outdoors. Enjoy some fun in the sun on the rapids, lazy river, hot tub, kiddie area and the many slides throughout the park. Also available: volleyball court, private pavilion, concession stand, gift shop and air brush tattoos!

8. The most kid-friendly hotels are: Campbell’s Resort is a family friendly hotel located right along Lake Chelan with walking access to shops and more. Expect sweeping views of the lake, friendly service and great amenities. Lounge along the private beach, or jump in one of the pools or hot tubs. They have two of each! Dining and spa services located on site as well.

9. For couples-only excursions: There are lots of great couples-only options. Get in on any of the many wine tours and tastings here in Lake Chelan. Grab a game of golf at Bear Mountain Golf Course. Relax and indulge in a couples massage at Campbell’s Resort. Or, stop by the Mill Bay Casino for some gambling fun.

10. The best time of year to visit Lake Chelan is: While Lake Chelan offers a variety of activities and events throughout the year (including skiing at Echo Ridge during the winter months), you’ll find so much to see and do during the summer – boating, swimming, golfing, tennis, wine tasting, farmers markets, fresh fruit stands and more.

11. The coolest thing about this area is: One of the things I love most about Lake Chelan, besides its obvious beauty, is its small town atmosphere. The residents are friendly, welcoming and committed to maintaining Lake Chelan’s charm. You won’t find fast food restaurants or big box franchises within city limits. What you’ll find instead are family-owned businesses run by folks like you and me.

Blog 66: Things to do in San Antonio {Spring Break ideas!}

By Ambre Brewster

If you’re like me, crazy mornings rushing kids out the door, long car lines at pick-up, and driving kids to and from school and other activities all day long has me dreaming about Spring Break!

Actually, all of that extra time during the drives and lines has given me plenty of time to start planning our Spring Break Trip. With that in mind, I thought I’d share highlights from last year’s trip with you for ideas for your Spring Break trip in case you are in planning mode!

If you’re looking for somewhere warm to visit, I suggest heading south to San Antonio, TX.  The weather that time of year is perfect for spending the majority of your time outside and that is exactly what we did.

While San Antonio has many hot spots like the Zoo, Sea World, and the Children’s museum, I’m not going to talk about those.  I’m going to hit on other hidden gems to supplement your trip with!

Riverwalk. Make your first stop lunch at La Gloria Ice House. Park there for free, eat outside beside the river, let the kids play in the grassy area, and enjoy drinks, yummy food, and beautiful scenery! They served one of the best margaritas I’ve ever had!

After eating, set out on foot to find the main part of the Riverwalk! One thing that is a must is sunscreen and hats!!!  Even though it is only mid-March the sun is hot and blazing! Enjoy the ducks, fish, and art from local artist!

When your legs are tired look for the water taxi! You can buy a all day pass for half of the waterway for $10 or for the whole waterway for $15 or a 3 day pass for $25. You’ll probably want a pass so you can ride back to your car at the Ice House at the end of the day!

At the Riverwalk Loop stop in at one of several restaurants for drinks and dessert and be serenaded by a mariachi band…. just know it is $10 for ONE song! You can also take a guided taxi tour around the historic loop to learn all about the Riverwalk area.

King William. For breakfast one day head to a part of SA known as the King William area and eat at a restaurant called El Mirador.  I highly recommend their breakfast tacos!

Another great breakfast hot spot is the Guenther House which used to be the home of the Pioneer Flour Mill and its founding family.  The place was beautiful and the food was AMAZING!!! This was my favorite breakfast place. One of the daily specials was Eggs Benedict and they were delicious. They also have yummy pancakes and waffles and a  gigantic cinnamon roll that is bigger than the plate and big enough for 8 to share as an appetizer before breakfast.

After breakfast at El Mirador you can head on foot towards the Alamo! Stop at Hemisphere Park to play and break up your walk! If your legs are tired, look for one of the bike rental stations and rent a bike for an hour, an afternoon, or the day!

Alamo is a huge tourist attraction which almost means there will probably be a HUGE line to stand in if you want to pay and go through it.  Or you can go around to the left of the Alamo and get in for free with no wait.  There are still plenty of things to read about and see for free.

After the Alamo, head to El Mercado to walk around and shop. A great place to pick up souvenirs!

Mi Tierra is one of the best restaurants we enjoyed. Check out the bakery while you wait.  They have candied oranges and sweet potatoes that are SO yummy as well as pralines! The best michelada beer I had here!! And they are famous for their carnita (pork marinated in orange) and cabrito (goat).  Enjoy food and drinks in a very festive atmosphere!

I think if you hit the hot spots I mentioned and add in a trip to Sea World, the Zoo, and/or the Children’s Museum you are sure to have a Spring Break the kids will always remember!

Blog 66: Things to do in Fort Worth, Texas

Guest post by Jody Halsted

Fort Worth tends to be overlooked when compared to her bigger, “flashier” sister city, Dallas.  But if you’re looking for cowboys, delicious cuisine and plenty of culture, make your way to ‘where the West begins’, buy yourself a cowboy hat and let the city impress you.

When I’m in Fort Worth, I should definitely plan to eat at:

Joe T Garcia’s.  Locals and tourists flock to Joe T Garcia’s for handmade Mexican cuisine.  What began an a small, intimate restaurant now stretches over an entire city block, with much of the seating in the amazing patio.  Filled with plants, fountains and small pools, my daughter said it was “like eating at a castle”.  Open for lunch and dinner daily, Joe T’s is both delicious and affordable.  Note: Credit cards are not accepted- bring cash!

The best shopping can be found at:

The Fort Worth Stockyards. Yes, it’s a tourist area, but hear me out. You can find malls anywhere, but if you want to remember your trip to Fort Worth, this is where you go.  From Leddy’s Boot Emporium and Sassy Pantz boutique to the handful of shops selling souvenirs, trinkets and cowboy hats, you’ll find exactly what you are looking for.  And don’t overlook Billy Bob’s Texas- the worlds’ largest Honkey Tonk. In its nearly 3 acres of building you’ll find an incredible gift shop- and everyone needs a Texas sized shot glass.

You do NOT want to miss seeing (local attractions):

Obviously the Fort Worth Stockyards make this list.  Wander what was once known as “Hells Half Acre”, view the museums, eat a steak the size of a small child and watch the twice-daily cattle drive.

But my favorite place to visit in Fort Worth is in the Cultural District; an area filled with museums and galleries.  The National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame is simply marvelous.  Filled with the sparkling costumes of rodeo performers, the even more glitzy costumes of television cowgirls, a bucking bronco and dozens of interactive displays, this museum shows the heart of the West.

Handy Tip for Visiting the Stockyards:

The Fort Worth Herd rides twice daily at 11:30am and 4pm.  It’s definitely a must-see if you’re in the area as Texas Longhorns are absolutely breathtaking.  Set your plans to catch the 4pm drive.  Not only will you miss any school groups that may be at the Stockyards for tours, but the afternoon drive is the larger of the two.

Be sure to take your kids to:

The Bureau of Engraving and Printing. One of only 2 locations that print our American currency, you can get a free tour here on weekdays. Where else can you walk over millions of dollars?

The most kid-friendly hotels are:

We are huge fans of Omni Fort Worth Hotel for their spacious suites and fun Sensational Kids Club perks that include cookies and milk for each child the first night of their stay.

For a more budget conscious stay, the Hilton Garden Inn Fort Worth Medical Center has a ‘cool pool’ area with indoor play area or the Towneplace Suites in downtown offer spacious suites with kitchenettes and complimentary breakfast buffet.

For couples-only excursions, stay here:

The Ashton Hotel in downtown Fort Worth is an elegant boutique property, sure to inspire romance.  Since you’re in the heart of downtown you’re near to everything…  if you want to go out, that is.

The best time of year to visit Fort Worth is:

Late summer through fall. While you’ll find events throughout the city year round, celebrations seem to peak at this time.  It’s comfortable to be out doors, the days haven’t yet gotten too short and the vibe of the city seems to be building up for the holiday season ahead.

The cool thing about Fort Worth is:

The Water Gardens. Located next to the Fort Worth Convention Center, this surprising oasis of tranquility is both breathtaking and relaxing.  An evening stroll here is the perfect way to cap off your visit to Fort Worth.

Blog 66: Things to do in Ireland

Jody Halsted is a blogger with a passion for travel.

She especially loves Ireland and sharing tips with those who have never made the trip at her blog, Ireland With Kids. Jody says, “The “Sunny Southwest” of Ireland includes the counties of Clare, Limerick, Kerry and Cork. This area is the most highly touristed spot in the country for good reason- comfortable weather, amazing scenery and loads of family friendly activities. If you are planning your first family trip to Ireland, this is where you should venture.”

Here are more of Jody’s recommendations:

When I’m in Doolin, County Clare I should definitely plan to eat at:

Gus O’Connor’s Pub. Fresh seafood and great craic (pronounced “crack” it’s the Irish word for fun and entertainment). I’m not sure what their fish & chips are battered in, but it’s the best I’ve ever had. This is also the place to hear traditional Irish music. Grab a pint and enjoy the lively tunes. Let the kids dance- yes, they’re welcome here!

When I’m in Cork City, County Cork I should definitely plan to eat at:

Farmgate Cafe. Located in the English Market, the menu is planned by what is fresh that morning. Definitely the freshest, most incredible food you’ll ever enjoy.

The best shopping can be found in:

Killarney. The undisputed tourist capital of Southwest Ireland, you’ll find souvenirs of all kinds here. Authentic Aran Sweaters can be found at the Aran Sweater Market, hand blown Kerry Glass is beautifully presented at Serendipity, Country Crafts has beautiful wooden puzzles, and Christy’s Irish Store will fill your need for trinkets, keychains and little gifts to take home to friends.

You do NOT want to miss seeing (local attractions):

The Cliffs of Moher. Yes, everyone goes there. For good reason- the views are astounding Be sure to visit the Atlantic Edge in the visitor’s center to learn about the Cliffs and local history. Don’t miss the display showing how eggs were collected from nests on the cliffs.

Shannon Heritage offers online discounts for the Cliffs of Moher and Bunratty castle (listed below).

Don’t worry about going to:

The Ring of Kerry. Yes, the views are beautiful, but for the same amazing views, less traffic and more interesting history, visit the Dingle Peninsula.

Be sure to take your kids to:

Bunratty Castle and Folk Park.  One of Ireland’s best preserved castles, you can wander it from top to bottom. The Folk Park features historical cottages, a wonderful playground, a beautiful walled garden, loads of animals and a warm pub, perfect for afternoon tea.

If you’ll be at Bunratty in the afternoon, purchase tickets for the Irish Night (held during high season). This fun evening includes a meal, live music and ceili (kay-lee) dancing.

The most kid-friendly hotels are:

In Ireland, stay at a family owned B&B. I recommend Bunratty Meadows for their warm welcome, great location near the Shannon Airport and cozy rooms; Harbour View in Doolin for their large rooms and central location between the Cliffs of Moher and the Burren; Mystical Rose in Killarney where you’re welcomed like family and the hostess knows everyone- and everything – in the area; and The Old Bank in Bruff, County Limerick where the rooms are luxurious and children are welcomed with open arms.

For couples-only excursions, stay here:

Adare Manor. This incredible 5 star resort in County Limerick will have you feeling like royalty.

The best time of year to visit Ireland is:

Fall shoulder season, late August through October.  The crowds have gone, the weather is still nice and it rains a bit less.  Attractions are still fully open, it’s no problem to find lodging and prices may be a bit lower than high season.

The cool thing about Southwest Ireland is (a “hidden gem” that only the locals know about):

Lough Gur. (Pictured at the top of the post. Photo credit: Jody Halsted). Very few tourists make their way to this area, which is truly a shame. Here you’ll find the largest stone circle in Ireland, megalithic tombs, castles, and even the entrance to Faerie Land. One of the most magical, and missed, spots in Ireland. To really appreciate this area, download their i-tours from the website or contact the Lough Gur Visitor’s Center and arrange for a guided tour.

Jody Halsted is a family travel authority with a strong affinity for Ireland. She encourages families to visit this magical isle and shares her tips at IrelandWithKids.com. Jody lives in central Iowa with her family- husband Doug, daughters Brenna and Caelan- and visits Ireland as often as possible.

Blog 66: Things to do in Tucson, Arizona

Are you hankering to Go West?!

If so, maybe you should consider Tucson, hometown of Becca Ludlum, blogger at Our Crazy Boys. Becca shares some of the best parts of her city here on Blog 66:

When I’m in Tucson, I should definitely plan to eat at:

Blanco Tacos + Tequila, Tohono Chul Tearoom or Café Poca Cosa. All three of these restaurants are frequented by locals for the atmosphere and amazing food. Blanco is part of a local restaurant chain and has to die for margaritas, the “tea room” (as locals call it)

Cafe Poca Cosa Chalkboard, Becca Ludlum

has a seasonal organic menu, and Poca Cosa has an amazing menu that changes twice daily and is brought to your table written on a chalkboard.

The best shopping can be found at:

La Encantada – it’s an upscale outdoor mall where you can window shop (well, I window shop. Maybe you can shop for real!) at stores like Tiffany & Co., lucy, and Williams Sonoma. Looking for local treasures? Head to Tres Amigos!

You do NOT want to miss seeing:

The Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum! See local animals of all types n their natural environment. Don’t miss “Live & (sort of) On The Loose!” where you’ll get an up close view of reptiles like Mexican Beaded Lizards, Diamond-backed rattlesnakes, and gila (pronounced “heela”) monsters.

Don’t worry about going to:

The Biosphere 2. It’s overrated and out of date, especially if you have children with you.

Be sure to take your kids to:

Ben’s Bells. They’ll all get a little messy and become part of something so much bigger than themselves. “Be kind” is a message that everyone needs to hear more.

Ben’s Bells (painting), Becca Ludlum

The most kid-friendly hotels are:

J.W. Marriot Star Pass (lazy river, water slide, teen lounge) and Ritz Carlton Dove Mountain (ranger program, pool with water slide) both have great summer deals and fantastic amenities for kids and teens.

For couples-only excursions, stay here:

I have to go back to J.W.Marriot. Amazing rooms, the 5:30 nightly tequila toast, and five amazing restaurants to choose from make Star Pass a Tucson Staycation favorite.

The best time of year to visit Tucson is:

October-November or March-April. It’s cooler then!

View from the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, Becca Ludlum

An awesome thing about Tucson is:

The 4th Avenue Street Fair comes to town every spring and fall and with over 400 craft booths, food vendors, musicians, and street performers. If you’re in town when the street fair is going on, it’s a must see!

About Becca: Hi there, I’m Becca – a mom of two amazing boys who wants you to feel right at home in this little corner of the internet. I’m an Arizona desert dweller, a speech therapist on a break from speech therapy, and a lover of any and all margaritas. My goal is to make you smile with each post I write. Thanks for stopping by and keeping up with Our Crazy Boys!
