March 2020 Calendar of Events for Northwest Arkansas

Welcome to March, mamas! This month is full of fun events around Northwest Arkansas — including a PlayDoh Party, the Starlight Gala, the Annual Beautiful Girls Retreat, Kiss a Pig Gala, Spring Break activities, and a great theatre performance from Trike Theatre about a school where crazy things happen with the teachers and kids. Mark your March calendars!

Bird Scavenger Hunt for Kids

Join the park interpreters at the visitor center to find clues left by the many birds who live here. We’ll be on the lookout for things that birds eat, plants that attract birds and even sketch birds we see on the trail. This hike covers a distance of about half a mile and lasts about 45 minutes. This activity is great for kids.

Battlefield Archeology Hike

March is Arkansas Archeology Month. What better way to celebrate the history of our state than to see first-hand where archeologists made some amazing discoveries at Prairie Grove Battlefield State Park. We will discuss what archeologists do, past projects here at the park and future plans to better understand the history that happened here. This hike will cover approximately ½-mile on grass and the Battlefield Trail. Please dress for the weather, wear comfortable shoes, and bring water.

Preschool Play Doh Party

This drop-in experience will provide a rainbow of Play-Doh colors, and all the fun tools your preschooler will need for a few hours of molding and creating. Best suited for ages 3+.

Miss Virginia

Join The Reform Alliance for a free screening of Miss Virginia, an inspiring film about a mother’s fight for her son’s education. RSVP to info@thereformalliance.org, put “West Fork Showing” in the subject line. Snacks will be provided.

Herbarium and Arthropod Museum Open House

Tour the largest preserved plant and arthropod collections in the state at the University of Arkansas Department of Biological Sciences and Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology. You are invited to tour the Herbarium and Arthropod Museum and learn about the importance of these scientific and beautiful collections. Bring the kids to visit the herbarium’s “Be a Botanist” station and see the museum’s live insect and spider displays. Light refreshments will be served.

Time: 1 p.m.

Location: The Herbarium and the Arthropod Museum are in the Printing Services building, located at 1580 W. Mitchell St., Fayetteville (at the corner of Eastern Avenue and Mitchell Street). The main entrance to the collections is on the west side of the building. Parking will be free in Lot 57A and Lot 52 on Saturday, March 7, so feel free to park in one of these lots during the open house. A campus parking map is available here.

Stop, Tessellate and Listen

In the latest addition to our Community Spotlights this year you’ll flex those math muscles of yours by designing your own tessellation with paper, pencil, and tape. Get creative as you build a 3D printed tessellation using computer software, discover 4-color theorem and put tessellation puzzles together. Join us and the folks from Fulbright Junior High on Saturday, March 7.

Trike Theatre’s Sideways Stories from Wayside School

Based on the perennial favorite children’s book by the bestselling and Newbery Medal-winning author Louis Sachar, this laugh-out-loud performance by Trike Theatre tells the story of a school where all sorts of funny things happen. Tickets are $14.

Time: varies by day, mostly 10 a.m., 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.

Downtown Rogers Art on the Bricks Art Walk

Art on the Bricks showcases the art of regional artists while enhancing the artistic and cultural opportunities of Downtown Rogers. On the second Thursday of each month, locally owned businesses host pop-up galleries throughout downtown Rogers to provide a free, family friendly experience.

Time: 4:30-7:30 p.m.

St. Patrick’s Day Craft and Snack

Join us in the Walmart Storytime Room for a St. Patrick’s Day-themed snack and craft. Choose between a few fun crafts (or do them all) and make a “trail mix” bag to take home. This event is open to families with preschool-elementary ages. Homeschoolers welcome.

12th Annual NWA Beautiful Girls Retreat

Mothers and daughters join us March 13-14 for the 12th Annual NWA Beautiful Girls Retreat at the Embassy Suites in Rogers. Our theme “Beautiful Life” will explore the past, challenges of making healthy present choices, and living intentionally. This community based, overnight conference will host Janelle Lunney, wife of Barry (Razorback Football Interim Head Coach); Emma Mae Jenkins, Viral YouTuber; Tori Harper, singer-songwriter from Nashville.

Registration is open until March 2nd. This includes a 2-day stay at the Embassy Suites in Rogers, a semi-formal dinner, spring fashion show, music, all you can eat breakfast buffet, tea time, lunch, workshop, service project and more. We will also have a free Hispanic session for Spanish speaking moms and/or daughters at 9:30-10:30 in Pinnacle Room 3.

Family Nature Workshop: Fancy Flowers

Roses are red, violets are blue, come to this workshop and have fun too. Discover the different meanings of flowers and their colors. Create your own floral arrangement and watercolor still life. One ticket per family. Best suited for ages 5-12, children must be with an adult caregiver. $10 ($8 members), register online or with Guest Services.

Easy as Pi

Celebrate the beauty and importance of mathematics and its essential role in everyone’s life during the first-ever International Day of Mathematics. This celebration expands Pi Day on March 14, to include the whole spectrum of mathematics. Join us for educational and hands-on activities for all ages at the Amazeum and don’t forget to ask Play Facilitators about their Zinglit bags.

Kiss a Pig Gala

This year’s theme for Kiss A Pig is “Hog Holiday.” It will be at the John Q. Hammons Center in Rogers on March 14th from 6 p.m.-11 p.m., it is a formal event. We are also excited to announce a live performance by Robin Thicke presented by Johnson & Johnson.

Seize the Clay

Sometimes you’ve got to get your hands a little dirty, and with the help of some real archaeologists, you can. Join us, on Wednesday, March 18 from 4-6 p.m., to celebrate Arkansas Archaeological Month for a Community Spotlight with the University of Arkansas Archaeology department. We’ll design pottery on a coloring sheet, explore real dig kits and tools, and even try making coil pots with clay.

Monday’s viewing is animated spy comedy, Spies in Disguise, rated PG; Abominable (PG) on Tuesday; Playing With Fire (PG) on Wednesday; Missing Link (PG) on Thursday;  and Frozen II (PG) on Friday.

Spring Break Camp

Does your bedroom need a refresh? We’ll show you how to reimagine your room at Make Room Camp. We’ve set up a blank room at the Amazeum for you to customize. Join us as we learn how to paint furniture, change knobs, make room decor, design storage and more. We’ll deck out our space and design custom pieces to start the rehaul of your own room. For ages: 6-11. Pre-registration and payment are required. Cost is $260 Amazeum members/$310 non members.

Family Workshop: Artist JooYoung Choi

Bring the whole family to the museum for this unique art-making experience. Led by State of the Art 2020 featured artist JooYoung Choi, families will create colorful puppets and film their creations in front of a green screen. Footage of these puppets may be used in the artist’s future work. Cost is $10 ($8/members), register online or with Guest Services.

Janet’s ALS Legacy Ride

The fifth Annual Janet’s Legacy Ride is scheduled for March 28th, 2020. The ride will take off at 10am so get there early so you can park, saddle etc. Up to date coggins are required. We will take off from Judy Glenn’s again this year. If anyone needs directions please let us know we are glad to help. Hay rides will be provided, and ATVs are welcome. Lunch and live auction will follow the ride as per tradition. Tickets are $15 per adult, $10 per child for ride and lunch, if you’re just coming for lunch $10 per adult, $5 per child. As usual ALL proceeds go to the ALS Association of Arkansas to help others fighting this terrible disease.
