Hi, my name is Eden and I’m interested in being a journalist. I’m taking a careers class and part of the class is job shadowing. For the class, I’m job shadowing and interviewing the mamas at nwaMotherlode.

Q:  What time do you typically get to work and leave work?

A:  We don’t have set hours. We are flexible and usually work typical office hours, starting around 9am and depending on the obstacles of that day, usually stopping around 6:30-7:30 pm. We do take some breaks during the day, sometimes at lunch time, and to pick the kids up from school at around 2:45 pm, starting back up at around 3:30 pm. Working at home does have its benefits, like being able to keep working after dealing with something like a sick kid.

Q:  How did your schooling/academics help you help in this work?

A:  S- I majored in communications and was a journalism minor. It took about six months to get to a newspaper job after graduating from college.

G-  I have an English degree with an emphasis in creative writing.

We had other jobs not in writing, in between getting a writing education and getting a job actually associated with writing. You really have to get to the right program, internship, etc. It’s really a trial by fire. You have to work into it and practice it. The more you write, the better you’ll be better prepared for jobs in the future.

Q:  What do you like best about what you do?

A:  G- I like the creative freedom of the job. I can change my mind whenever and be able to do my own thing without having a boss standing over you telling you what you can and can’t do in your writing.  It’s an expression of who you are and is fun and creative.

S- I like the relentlessly helpfulness of the job. I like helping moms and the personal aspect of it, like telling people they won giveaways.

Q:  What do you like least about what you do?

A:  The parts that we like least about what we do are necessary tasks having nothing to do with writing, like the invoicing aspects of running a website and trying to make sure numbers are correct and in order.

Note from the mamas: We loved having Eden job shadow today! She’s so much fun and we can tell she’s going to ROCK as a writer in the future. Well, she’s already rockin’ it 🙂 Thanks for the interview, Eden!
