Time-outs work best for us. We find that our 5 year-old only starts acting up when he’s tired or hungry or frustrated, so a time-out allows him to cool down and come at the issue with a level head. It’s no different than me having to take a walk around the office when I am at the end of my rope on something. When we have spanked, it only makes us feel badly, and sends the message to our son that he is not allowed to be upset or lose control. He’s a little human, so we try to respect his humanity – the good AND the bad.

In my opinion, I don’t believe spanking is an effective way to teach MY child how to behave better. We will use time-outs when needed to curb bad behavior.
I grew up where my parent spanked on a regular basis anytime we did something bad. Honestly, it didn’t do much but make me more angry – therefor, made the situation worse and I was often resentful.

I think it’s funny that no one so far has said spankings. I guess maybe it’s because it says most often, or people are too afraid to say it. I’m not; I still use spankings in my discipline… I have a 7, 10 and 16 yr old and there are times when an old fashioned butt spankin needs to be used. Thank goodness not very often. I didn’t get very many when i was growing up, but the couple i did worked!
